Bio
Piper Davis sings electro-blues. With vocal influences ranging from Tim Armstrong to Betty Davis, and self-made, micro-sampled beats that have drawn comparisons to MIA and Santigold, her songs represent a mixed bag of musical genres.
Born in the mountain town of Golden, BC, Piper was brought up on Bob Dylan and classical records. She discovered electronic music in her teens, singing improvised vocals over house DJ sets, and ended up throwing her own massive parties in the late 90's as she finished up high school. That scene's driving emphasis on percussion would play a large part in her later production.
Surviving the Rave era, Piper later resurfaced in Vancouver. In 2007, she earned her degree from the Simon Fraser University School for Contemporary Arts, and launched her solo career.
Within the past year Piper has opened for Dragonette and LA ROUX at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, showcased her live set at the Drake Hotel during NXNE 2009 and Canadian Music Week 2010. She was the only Canadian accepted to attend the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona where she worked alongside Russell Delgado, sound engineer for Erykah Badu and The Roots, and Latin Grammy winner Natalia Lafourcade among others. Last year Piper's single 'Academics' was selected for the Mercedes Benz Mix Tape 19 and featured on the compilation's release in Germany, Japan and the U.S. She has been featured in numerous publications including Exclaim Magazine, The Georgia Straight, Ion Magazine, and the New York Post.
For the remainder of 2010 Piper looks forward to releasing her first full-length album as well as a remix EP, recording more material with Natalia Lafourcade in Mexico City and continuing to showcase her music live.
