I really like telling stories. When I was little my mom made me wear a headlamp and go running through the mountains in the early mornings. That story's a true one. I also had to wear a pirate eye patch for a while and crawl laps around the kitchen table and stairway with knee pads on. These stories are better without the reasons behind them.
As far as music goes, I always knew I wanted to be a musician, but when I was a kid I wrote songs for other people to sing because I only liked boys' voices. It wasn't until I was about 18 when I came back from the rave netherworld that I began making music the way I do now.
It all started at some house party in Calgary where I sang something randomly and got bookings doing improvised vocals with DJs out of it. I was very driven toward music but I didn't think I was a real musician because I was just improvising. It wasn't until I moved back to Vancouver and went to music school that I realized I actually had a skill.
Before I graduated with my BFA I started making my own tracks with a basic knowledge of Pro Tools for practice while I waited to be discovered. That's what I actually thought I was doing. Luckily I ended up enjoying it. After I put a few terrible songs on MySpace that I scored with fake orchestral midi sounds and told everyone I knew to listen to them, I started working really hard because I had to put out something less embarrassing right away.
The rest is my solo project. Now I make mostly micro-sampled beats out of whatever I find. I use all kinds of rough snipits, found sounds and recorded bits and pieces that I put them all together. I'm not very guarded with my music. I share almost everything I make.
I'm excited that I'm finally at a place where I can make a proper finished product now though. I'm about to put out my first mixed and mastered CD in the fall of 2009 which is definitely due, but my "Song of the Month Club 2009" is still all homemade. This series will probably be the last of my homemade music releases.
You can look at my EPK for a professional overview of what I'm up to. I recently got back from the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona and I'm about to go record and mix some music in Mexico City. Music is important to me and I really appreciate it when people say they like my tracks, but I love it when someone says they like my moves.
